Waking Hours by Marshall To

Marshall To’s Waking Hours is a dispatch from the foothills of sleep, the neural no-man’s land where consciousness becomes untethered from reality yet refuses to submit to the elusive and swarming undertow of actual dreams. As such, these images—photographs, paintings, and drawings—function much like screen captures from a rapidly deteriorating Jungian film strip.
To’s work has been shaped by his upbringing in a family of Taoist, second-generation Chinese immigrants in Canada, and his genetic inheritance included powerful strains of mysticism, mythology, and the supernatural. From these very raw materials he navigates the thin place between this world and that of the swirling phantasms beyond the veil, where fragmented images and voices are stirred up out of the murk of memory and the scattered remnants of a child’s imagination.
Waking Hours will speak to anyone who knows what not sleeping looks like, or who recognizes in themselves the creeping sleep paralysis that is a hallmark of the 21 st century.
